Wednesday, January 30 - Matthew 13

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 – Matthew 13

You can read the test of Matthew 13 here if you like:  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2013&version=NIV1984

The Greek word for parable means “a placing beside.”  I parable is a story that runs alongside a heavenly truth.  When reading a parable, it is helpful to ask certain questions.

Who represents God in the story?

Where can I find myself in the story?

How does this truth speak to my life today?

13:1-9  Give this parable a title the represents how to apply it to life.   Answer the above questions.

13:18-23          What kind of ground did the seed of God’s Word find in your life?  In what ways has the soil sometimes changed through the years?

Title and answer the parable questions for these parables.

              13:24-30

  13:31-32

               13:44-46

   13:47-50

13:53-58:    Why do you think Jesus’ hometown rejected Him?    What stumbling blocks stood in their way from truly recognizing Jesus as Messiah?   Are there any stumbling blocks between you and God right now?

Tuesday, January 29 - Matthew 12

Tuesday, January 29 – Matthew 12

Read Matthew 12 here, if you wish:  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew%2012&version=NIV1984

In the Hebrew language, the number for seven is the origin for the word “Sabbath.”   In Exodus 20, the Israelites were told that this should be a holy day, dedicated to God.

12:1-14:     Why was it okay for Jesus to disobey the Sabbath laws of the Pharisees?  Were they God’s laws, or laws created by men?   How is Jesus the “Lord of the Sabbath?”  How do you think the Pharisees felt about Jesus’ response?

How does Jesus challenge the Pharisees when they question His willingness to heal someone on the Sabbath?   In what ways does He point out their hypocrisy?

Note already here in verse 14 that they begin their plot to kill Jesus.

12:15-21:  Note again Matthew’s usage of Old Testament quotation to indicated Jesus as the fulfillment of Messianic prophecies.  Here he quotes one of the famous “Servant songs” from Isaiah.

12:25-29:   The Pharisees accuse Jesus of being Beelzebub, the prince of demons.   How does Jesus challenge the logic of this claim?

Jesus speaks of a “house divided?”  What does He mean by this?  How is this a warning to congregations?

12:31  Speaks of a sin which cannot be forgiven.  This has been called the sin against the Holy Spirit.  It is when a person is convinced of the truth of God’s actions in an individual and chooses to blaspheme against them.  One who has committed this sin would not be worried if he had committed it because his heart is hardened against God.

12:38-45:  When the Pharisees ask for a sign, what sign does Jesus point to?

Jesus claims that a greater king than Solomon has arisen.  To whom does He refer?

Jesus warns about evil spirits and their desire to occupy a house.  How do people today open up footholds for the devil to exploit?

12:46-50:    Is Jesus dishonoring his mother and brothers here, or is he somehow commending His disciples?

January 28, 2013 - Matthew 11

Monday, January 28 - Matthew 11

Read Matthew 11 here, if you wish:  http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2011&version=NIV1984

John the Baptist had a two-pronged role.  1)  He called the people to repentance and a genuine faith-life and   2)  he prepared the way for the Messiah to come.

Both of these threatened the power of the leadership of the day, so John was arrested and put into prison.

11:1-6   How did John probably expect the Messiah to act?   How does Jesus answer his question about whether He is genuinely the Messiah?  Why do you think Jesus didn’t answer the question directly?

11:7-15    In one sense, these words of Jesus might be considered a funeral sermon for John  (Matthew 14:1-12 records John’s execution.)

How did John fulfill Old Testament prophecy?  What new era did John usher in?

The coming of Elijah is prophesied in Malachi 4:5-6.

5 “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

How did John accomplish this?  Why does this make him great?   In what was is he “least?”

When have you had doubts about Jesus?   What questions would you have liked to ask Him?

11:20-24:   Jesus did miracles in the cities mentioned, but people did not recognize Him as Messiah?   Does God hold us accountable for recognizing His hand at work?  Do we always attribute today’s miracles to Him?

11:25-30   What burden is making you weary in these days?   Have you turned this burden over to Jesus?

Friday, January 25 - Matthew 10

Friday, January 25
Matthew 10

In this chapter Jesus commissions the twelve to carry out His work.  It serves as a precursor to the life that they will have after He ascends into heaven.

10:1-42  Consider the specifics of Jesus’ instructions.  What assignments does He make?  What warnings does He give?  What comfort does He offer?

Assignments

Warnings

Comfort

10:11-16, 40-42   Hospitality toward the Word of God and those who proclaim it is highlighted here.  In what ways have you welcomed the Word in your home?   In what ways have your home not been as welcoming as you would like?  What could you do to change this?

10:17-20    Have you ever felt disfavor or prejudice against you because you were a Christian?  Do you have any concern that the world might become less tolerant of Christian teaching and principles?   Do you ever wonder whether you might compromise your principles if you faced persecution?   What strength does God offer in these verses?

10:32-42   In these verses Jesus describes a discipleship that places Him first above all things – even the closest of relationships.  Has any relationship you’ve been involved with ever led you in a direction against Christ and the Gospel?  How have your family and friends helped you as a Christian?

Thursday, January 24, Matthew 9

Thursday, January 24
MATTHEW 9

Matthew was a tax colledtor who worked for the Roman government which had occupied Israel.  Often these tax collectors cheated the people in order to line their own pockets.

9:1-9    Jesus reads the thoughts of His critics.  Is it initmidating to know that God knows your every thought?  Is there some comfort in knowing He knows everything about you?

Why might Jesus have chosen someone like Matthew to be a disciple?   Why might Matthew have responded eagerly to Jesus' calling?   How do you feel about Jesus' desire to employ you as His disciple?

9:14-17  The Pharisees had expanded Old Testament rules and rituals and had a whole set of expectations for God's people which were not from God.   What rites and rituals have people today added to God's commands?  Have any of these affected you?

9:18-25   A dead girl is raised, and Jesus characterizes death as "sleep."  How is this a beautiful image for a believer to grab hold of as we consider our own end?

9:36:  What people do you see today who are "likie sheep without a shepherd?"  How is Jesus sending you to help the lost sheep?  What gifts has God given you to use inthis work?  How are you using them?

9:37-38  Jesus declares that the "harvest is plentiful."  Were are you encountering people who do not know Jesus?  How is He equiping you for the challenge?  Are you praying for these people?

Wednesday, January 23 - Matthew 8

Wednesday, January 23 - Matthew 8.
One of the ways Matthew tries to show that Jesus is the Messiah is through the miracles Jesus performs. That Jesus is God is revealed through his power to heal, to command the forces of nature, and to expel the forces of the devil.
8:1-13: What do these two examples of faith teach us about Jesus? What is the relationship between God's great power and the faith which receives it?
8:5-13 The centurion who comes to ask Jesus for help is a foreigner; in fact, the Romans might be considered an enemy of the Jews. Why might Matthew have recorded this healing of the servant of an enemy? What does this say about how we should be toward those who are outside our community and whom we might consider enemies?
8:21-22 Jesus may seem insensitive to the disciple who wishes to bury his father, but it seems like the father may not have been dead yet. Jesus is saying that commitment to faith and discipleship must come first. What kinds of things might a Christian today have to leave behind to be part of His work?
8:23-34 What storms in your life has Jesus calmed? What current turbulence iin your life can you ask Jesus to silence even now?
8:28-34: Demon possession appears to be very real according to the New Testament. How might a person become possessed? What does this section show us about Jesus' power over the forces of evil and His desire to bring cleansing to those who have fallen?

Tuesday, January 22. Matthew 7

Tuesday, January 22:  Matthew 7

The Sermon on the Mount was given by Jesus to help the crowd realize that they could not keep God's law perfectly.  They needed help!   They needed a Savior!  To be right with God could only be achieved by His grace.

7:1-6  relates to judging others.  Have you ever had a judgmental attitude toward someone else?  How did it affect you?  How did it affect the people around you?  How would you recommend approaching people wh need help of correction?  How would you want someone to approach you?

7:7-12   What does this mean?  "Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you."  Does God promise to answer every prayer?

On what does Jesus base His promise to answer prayers?  Does this encourage you in your prayer life?

7:12 is often called the Golden Rule.  Has it sometimess been difficult for you to keep this guide for living?  How might our world be different if everyone followed this rule?

7:15   Are there any modern false prophets? What kind of bad fruit do they bear?  How does their insincerity lead to their rejection?

7:24-27  On what are you building your life?  What is your most important goal or priority?  Is this thing more like rock or like sand?

7:29   What was it, about Jesus' words, that amazed people?  How has Jesus' teaching amazed you?

January 21. Matthew 6

MONDAY, JANUARY 21
Matthew 6

This chapter is also part of the Sermon on the Mount.

6:1-18:   Why does Jesus encourage giving, praying, and fasting to be done in secret?  Why do people sometimes do these things in public?  Do you prefer public prayers, or your own personal and private ones?    What should motivate a person to give?  How does our sinful nature sometimes affect the way we give to God?

vv. 8-13  The Meaning of The Lord's Prayer  (From Luther's Small Catechism)

Hallowed be Thy name.
How do we keep God's name holy?  When His word is taught purely and we live according to His word.

How does God's kingdom come?  (Thy kingdom come)
When our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead a godly life here in time and hereafter in eternity.

How is God's will kept?  (Thy will be done)
When God breaks and hinders every evil counsel and will which would not let us hallow the name of God nor let His kingdom come, such as the will of the devil, the world, and our flesh; but strengthens and keeps us steadfast in His Word and in faith unto our end.

What is meant by daily bread?  (Give us this day our daily bread)
Everything that belongs to the support and wants of the body, such as meat, drink, clothing, shoes, house, homestead, field, cattle, money, goods, a pious spouse, pious children, pious servants, pious and faithful magistrates, good government, good weather, peace, health, discipline, honor, good friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.

What does it mean, "forgive us our trespasses?"  (Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.")
We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look upon our sins, nor deny our prayers on account of them; for we are worthy of none of the things for which we pray, neither have we deserved them; but that He would grant them all to us by grace; for we daily sin much, and indeed deserve nothing but punishment. So will we, on our part, also heartily forgive and also readily do good to those who sin against us.

What does "lead us not into temptation" mean?
God, indeed, tempts no one; but we pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us, so that the devil, the world, and our flesh may not deceive us, nor seduce us into misbelief, despair, and other great shame and vice; and though we be assailed by them, that still we may finally overcome and gain the victory.

Deilver us from evil.
We pray in this petition, as in a summary, that our Father in heaven would deliver us from all manner of evil, of body and soul, property and honor, and at last, when our last hour shall come, grant us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this vale of tears to Himself into heaven.

6:19-21:   What are the three most important priorities in your life -- your treasures?  How does this list reflect where your heart is?  Are these the kinds of things that can be destroyed by "moth" or "rust"?

Jesus is always concerned that weath can get in the way of our relationship with God.  It what ways does materialism interfere with your personal spiritual growth?  How do you decide how you will use the blessings God has given you?

6:25-34:  This section is one of the most beautiful and encouraging in Scripture.  What is making you anxious today?  What does Jesus teach here about your worries?

Day 5: Friday, January 18. Matthew 5

Friday, January 18 -  Matthew 5

Matthew 5:1-7:29 is a well-known as Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount."  It's point is to help the Israelites realize that true blessedness is found in a relationship to God.  This relationship will not be based on holy living, nor ethnic background.  Neither of these can make one right before God.  It will instead be based on Him who came to keep the law perfectly for us and to pay the price for our sin.

 ======================================================================

5:1-12:  This familiar section is called the Beatitudes  How do these "attitudes" reflect the unconditional love of God?  How do they differ from the world's view of "blessed?"

"poor in spirit" is the maperson who, by the power of God's Spirit, is able to lay down in abeyance his own human spirit -- to let go, and to put His trust -- all his trust ~ in the tender care of God.
"those who mourn"refers to the person whose heart is mourning, broken, hurting for the world's suffering and its sin and its lost condition.

"meek" is the man who has his instincts, impulses and passions under control because he himself is controlled by God and realizes his own weakness.

"those who hunger and thirst for righteousness" is the one who wants nothing more than to do the right thing. To reach out to those with needs. To bring the truth to those who live in darkness. To bring justice to those being unjustly treated.

"merciful." is the person who gets right inside other people until he can see with their eyes, think with their thoughts, feel with their feelings. A truly empathetic person who compassionately touches the lives of others.

"pure in heart." is the person whose has pure motives for the things he does. Who doesn't do them looking for pats on the back or admiration or compensation. But does them simply because they are the right things to do.

"the peacemakers,"  is the person who, by God's power, is able to produce right relationships between people.  He can see through conflict and hurt feelings and broken brothers and help them see the way of repair.

"those who are persecuted for righteousness sake is the person who, by God's power, can rejoice in persecution because he recognizes that God can use such things to mold his character and shape his being. He sees good in evil situations.
======================================================================

5:14-16:   How does a person let his light shine in the darkness?  How are Christians called to bring the light to places throughout the world?

5:43-48:  Who are those whom you have trouble loving?  How can Jesus help you to love and pray for them?

Day 4 - THURSDAY, January 17: Matthew 4

Day 4 - MATTHEW 4   January 17

Forty seems to be a number of waiting -- and preparation.  Jesus' temptation in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights recalls the experiences of Moses (Exodus 24:18;  34:28) and Elijah (1 Kings 19:8), as well as the wandering of the children of Israel for 40 years before God led them into the promised land.   The season of Lent is also 40 days long (not counting Sundays).  Lent can be a time for us to reflect on our dependence on God as we approach the Good News of Christ's resurrection.

4:1-11  Consider the fact that Jesus was tempted to sin by the devil before he began is preaching ministry.  Why do you think this was important or significant?

What do you think the Devil was tempting Jesus to do?  What would have been the price of Jesus yielding to the temptations of Satan?

4:4, 7, 10   Jesus uses the Word of God to encounter the temptations of Satan.  In what ways can Christians mirror this victory of Christ as they encounter Satan?  What other things have you found helpful in resisting temptation?

4:17   Jesus calls for his followers to repent.  "Repent" literally means to turn around and go the other way.   If your life were a car, in what places might the Lord desire you to make a "U-Turn?"

4:18-22   When Jesus asks Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow Him, they leave their nets and follow Him.  What was it about Jesus that made them willing to take this new journey?    What is it about Jesus that makes you willing to follow His words?

4:23-25    Remember a time when Jesus brought healing to you or to someone you love.  Did you recognize His hand?  Did you thank Him?

Wednesday, January 16 - Matthew 3

DAY 3 - WEDNESDAY, January 16
Matthew 3

John the Baptist is the one who was prophesied as the "preparing prophet" who would usher in the era of fulfillment.  He announced his message in a desert region.  The food he ate (locusts and honey) was probably the food which was available to him.  His strange dress(camel hair), food, and lifestye were a visual protest against self-indulgence and a faith which is in name only.  Remember to keep track of all the references Matthew makes to the Old Testament.

3:1-2  John called people to repent.  "Repent" iterally means "to turn arond and go the other way."  Are there any things in your life from which you need to turn and go away?  If so, what are they?

3:9  The Jews to whom Matthew was writing were descendants of Abraham, who was specially chosen by God and with whom God had a special relationship.  John warns against thinking one's heritage is enough to assure salvation.  Might a Christian need the same warning?

3:16    In baptism, Jesus identifies with our sinfulness and our need for forgiveness.  What meaning does His example have for you?

3:17   God is well-pleased with His Son because of His obedience, faithfulness, and willingness to be the bearer of the burden of our sin.  As we are connected to Jesus, God is also "well-pleased" with us.  Today search your life to consider what areas might be distracting you from your connection to Christ.

Pick one verse from this chapter as your theme for the day.

January 15 - Matthew 2

DAY 2:   Matthew 2

Matthew makes it clear in this chapter that the Good News is not just for Jews, but for all people.

2:1-12   The Magi were studiers of the stars -- foreigners who came to worship the king of the Jews.  How might they have come to know about the Savior?  Why was it important for Matthew to share this story with his readers?

2:3   King Herod is disturbed by the news of a newborn King.  Why might he be disturbed?  It also says that "all Jerusalem" was disturbed.  Why might Jerusalem also be disturbed?  How might the message of Jesus disturb people today?

2:6   What do you know about Bethlehem?  Why was it important that Jesus be born there?  How might it symbolize Jesus' mission as the Savior?

2:16   What does Herod do when he learns that he had missed his chance to kill the newborn king?   Herod's atrocity reminds us of Old Testament Pharaoh, who killed baby boys because he feared Israelite power.  How does the story also look forward to what Jesus would eventually do for us?

This chapter records several different ways that God communicated with His people.  What are they?  How does God speak to you in your life?  What things in your life make it difficult to "hear" God's message'?

2:7-23   God takes great care to protect the baby Jesus.  How does God work to care for the weak and helpless today?  How can you be a part of God's aid to the helpless and needy?

What one verse from today's reading can be a theme for your day?

January 14 - Matthew 1

January 14:   Matthew 1

Matthew, a Jewish Christian, writes his gospel for Jewish readers.   He is making the case for Jesus being the Savior of the world by showing Him to be the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.  Note, as you read, the many times Matthew quotes the Old Testament.

=======================================================================

vv 1-17  Today, as you read the genealogy of Jesus, what names do you recognize?

Why might it have been important for Jesus to be descended from Abraham and David?  (Abraham was the father of Israel, and David its greatest king.  Both had received promises that the Savior of the world would be a descendent of theirs.)

The women included in the genealogy include Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba.  Tamar and Bathsheba are known for their sin.  Rahab was a prostitute who protected the Israelite spies.  Ruth is a foreigner.  Why might these have been included in Jesus' genealogy?

v. 21:  "Jesus" is the Greek form of the name "Joshua," which means "the Lord saves."  Why is Joseph told to give the baby this name?

v. 20, 24 -- What is Joseph instructed to do by God?  How does Joseph respond?  Do you think this was a difficult decision?  What difficult decisions do you face today?

vv. 23-25  -- "Immanuel" means "God with us."  In what ways do you experience God with you in daily life?
