Thursday, August 1 - 1 Corinthians 11

WORSHIP

This passage suggests that Christians are to honor God in their worship by showing Him proper praise, faithful decorum according to the customs of the day, and a recognition of His headship.  Paul recognizes that these principles are being violated at Corinth, with women dressing in a loose manner (apparently for show) and men not properly celebrating God's headship over themselves and their families.

Worship customs and attire change frequently, and we may not relate to all these directions from St. Paul.  However, there is no question that Paul directs men to be spiritual leaders in their homes, that women should honor God and honor their husbands as they lead, and that worship should never become entangled with pride-filled activity.

In similar fashion, the Corinthians had dishonored the Lord's Supper by misusing it as a drinking feast, letting it cause financial divisions among them, and not properly recognizing Christ's body and blood.

Holy Communion is intended to unite God's people and to strengthen them in their faith so that they can face everyday trials.  And so, today also, we gather as a family of faith around God's table not to judge or condemn one another, but to be bound to one another to work together as a church.

May we always honor God as we worship together, celebrate His Supper, and bond together in faithful and dedicated service to Him, one another, and the world.
